Stand-Up

After updating all charts for Google searches and questions at Stack Overflow last month, I thought maybe this month would be less work. Well, it wasn’t: I started to measure the popularity of IDEs and build tools. Why? Because we need them to build Java applications! With IDEs, build tools, JVM languages, databases, back-end frameworks, web frameworks, and mobile app frameworks, I hope I don’t have to add a new section anytime soon. 😅

As a Java developer, I occasionally wonder: How popular is Java compared to other programming languages? You know, like Python, JavaScript, C#, or Go? I did something about this: I now measure developer popularity (courses bought at Udemy, Google searches, questions at Stack Overflow) of Java vs. these competitors. I couldn’t squeeze in measuring job ad mentions this month, but I hope to do that in the future.

Talking about “less work”: It is indeed a lot of work to create the 38 charts every month. Especially because the changes month-over-month are small, with some wilder swings in job ad mentions recently being the only exception. That’s why I decided to only update the Technology Index quarterly going forward. So the next update will be for the October issue on Wednesday, October 5. I’ll still collect the job ad mentions and the courses bought at Udemy monthly, though.
