LJC Lightning Talk: Google Jib: Smaller & Faster Docker Images for Java Applications

Illustration for Google Jib: Smaller & Faster Docker Images for Java Applications

Talk

In the spring of 2020, the London Java Community (LJC) started hosting online lightning talks every other Friday. I gave my second lightning talk there on May 15, 2020.

I discussed Google Jib, a Docker image build tool. Google Jib creates layered Docker images for Java applications. With these images, you usually push 90%+ less data to your Docker repository. So Jib saves a ton of time & network bandwidth!

Video

The talk is on YouTube. Fitting the cat picture on the title slide, my own cat Max makes a suprise appearance during the talk. The little rascal!

Slides

  • If you’re on an Apple device and have Apple’s Keynote presentation program installed, then you should read the animated Keynote slides. Please follow this link, click the “Download” button, and then download the slides file. Then you can view them with Apple’s Keynote.
  • Everybody else should should read the PDF slides.

Source Code & Getting Started

In my talk, I used a project to demonstrate Jib. I created a Github repository to host that sample project. The repository has all the sources you need to run the example yourself. It also goes into more detail than the presentation. Finally, you’ll find there how you can start using Google Jib in your own projects, too!
